>> reporter: there is a vacant home in the home. its the one with the most visible damage. you can see the block soot around the windows. it spread to the other three homes around it. the entire rows of homes are unlivable right now. firefighters are here and they have been here since last night. they are keeping the area closed off because the house, number 1, is structurally unsound. no one can go inside. not even firefighters until the crews get here later on. it is also closed off. caution tape in front of the garage. there is still an active arson investigation going on. firefighters don't know yet exactly how the fire all began. they are looking into what caused it. they told ktvu they did see peoplele running. and -- people were running. and they did have problems with scatters in the

area -- squatters in the area. 28 people were displaced. the fire chief the outcome -- the fire chief said it could have been worse. >> this is a lot of people's homes. there is a tv on in the adjacent building. and children are displaced as well. >> reporter: now back out here live. now, that it is daylight. arson investigation is going to pick up again. police investigators are out here helping with that. we are hoping to talk to investigators to find out what they found in terms of a possible cause for the fire. we will update you later on in the show. >> live from san francisco. allie rasmus, ktvu. >> only minutes after getting the fire understand control, firefighters rushed to a second fire. that one started around 11:20 at california and hyde streets. two people were displaced by the fire and the cause of the fire is also being investigated. >> the death toll continues to climb and from the severe

weather battering in the nation's heartland, it appears damaged in southern indiana and western kentucky. tornadoes killed at least 39 people and in all 52 people have been killed by tornadoes in the past week. it stretched from the gulf coast to the great lakes. amateur photographer captured one twister forming near a gas station. they say another tornado packed wind gusts up to 175 miles per hour. also this morning, a 2-year-old girl is in critical condition. she is the only member of her immediate family to survive one of those deadly tornadoes. coming up in less than 10 minutes. a story of sadden and hope and the toddler named angel. >> in overnight news. an ac transit passenger was pursued in oakland. >> they were chasing after the driver and what they believe was a stolen mercedes beans. they per sued

him -- mercedes-benz and they couldn't overtake him. the passengers bumped his head and he is okay. the suspect after crashing his car, he was caught by police. a high speed chase overnight in concord ended with a chase at 2:00 on clayton road. police tried to stop the car and it kept going. speeds topped 90 miles per hour during the chase. the car eventually spun out on brian highway and the man was arrested. a man was killed after being shot multiple sometimes and run over by a car. eighty-eighth avenue and e street in east oakland after 3:00 this morning. they found the victim in the street. they are questioning witnesses and they have not released a motive and no arrests have been made. occupy oakland protestors

are rallying. they are accused of a hate crime. people marched down last night alleging police abuses. three people were arrested after a demonstration at a wells fargo bank last month. the occupiers attacked a woman who heckled them. >> davis was arraigned on friday. the other two will head to court tomorrow. new this morning, an american woman was among those killed in a head on train crash in southern poland. the accident happened late yesterday. workers works through the night to free them from the wreck. more than 50 others were injured. the name of the hometown and the hometown of the american victim has not been released. they say the train tracks were under maintenance. and it is still too early to tell what caused the crash. this is the worse train disaster in poland in 20 years. things have calmed down after a computer switch over

gingrich came in third and fourth place. ron paul celebrated the second place finish last night. he was the only candidate who spent time campaigning and buy commercial ad time on networks. paul's second place finish means he gets five of washington's delegates. >> we are in a good second place. >> but the good news, is we are doing very, very well in getting delegates. >> ron paul has focused heavily on caucus states because his campaign believes caucuses allow paul to gain more supporter. some people who wanted to vote in washington are now complaining that they did not get a chance. the complaints are coming from the town of kennewick. they expected 1500 people to show up at a local convention center to participate and instead of the 1500. close to 3,000 people showed up. gop officials say they did not

have enough computers or volunteers to teal with such a large crowd and had no choice but to turn 800 people away. as the gop candidates fight for their party's nomination. president obama is looking ahead to november. they are questioning whether he will have the same level of support from black voters. african-american voters turned out for the president in 2008. he ended up getting 96% of the black vote. since then many in the black community have been hard hit by the recession and the struggling recovery. >> i have had three or four different jobs. when you have a family trying to support. you do what ever it takes. no matter the odds. >> california congresswoman maxine waters say attacks from republicans against president obama have strengthened the resolve of african-american to reelect him. there is a controversial

. a shuttle bus was knocked over pay a plane at the detroit airport yesterday. a passenger on the plane took this video, the left wing of the delta airlines plane clipped the shuttle bus as it was taxing to the -- taxiing to the gate. a man who lived in the home surrounded by of lava has been forced to leave. jack thompson's home was the last one standing in his hawaii subdivision. all of the other homes were

buried by lava over the past 26 years. that wasn't enough to get him to move. the hot lava once again began to flow through his neighborhood. thompson's home was destroyed. and he was airlifted to safety. more people are asked to evacuate as the water continues to rise. 3900 people are told to leave their homes after a week of heavy rain. death is being blamed on the flooding. water levels are expected to remain high for the next 24 hours. >> if you like yesterday's weather. you will love today. if you love today, enjoy it whale it lasts. rosemary said it is not sticking around. >> the cool down begins tomorrow. maybe a sprinkle monday night into tuesday morning. there is sunshine bouncing off the water. sun is up for 45 minutes. we are holding steady in the upper 30s. for the valley locations.

a sea otter credited with helping rescue other sea otters. they have long helped rehabbed sea otters. and tula was a valuable part of their team. she was rescued back in 2,001. she was thought to be 15 or 16 years old and died of natural causes. the sled dog race begins today north of anchorage, alaska. they took part in the ceremonial start. it is a two week, 1,000 mile trek through alaska. there are 66 mushers this year with each team having 12 to 16 dogs. search for two missing teen insist the east bay and both have health uribes that have family members and authorities concerned. >> they will try to figure out what caused the fire in san francisco that left more than two dozen people without a place to live. >> more on the devastating storms in the midwest.

temporary housing after fire destroyed their homes. live pictures from the scene at oakland avenue. and crews are still on the scene and they have been called out to try to determine the cause of the fire. it started last night in a vacant building and spread to three other homes. >> we are grateful that there was no injuries associated with this. there are a lot of people home. and there is a tv on in the adjacent building. people are displaced as well. >> it took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control. allie rasmus will have a live report on the investigation am could go up at 8:00. the national story is the recovering efforts following days of tornadoes. 39 people are confirmed dead from friday's tornadoes. 13 people were killed in the twisters. they cut a path across the

country from the gulf coast to the great lakes. they captured one of the twisters forming another an indiana gas station. another tornado made toe packed wind gusts up to 170 miles an hour. they are bricking tight knit communities even closer. one of the hardest hit areas is the town of harrisburg, illinois. while crews are beginning to clear out the rubble and debris. they are holding memorial services for the victims. hundreds of people lined the streets outside a funeral home to pay respects. >> it is very important. if i was in their shoes. i would want my community to pull together. lots of innocent victim as and we want to pull together and show them everybody cares. >> they are vowing to attend every funeral in the town whether they new the vick tunnel or not. > er they are under way in the region. they helped assemble five boxes

of food. they send relief packages around the world. they sent care packages to tornado victims in missouri last year. you will find more coverage on the website at ktvu.com. we have put together several slide shows and you will find them under the deadly weather tab. bay area law enforcement officers are trying to find a teenager with cerebral palsy and other health issues. he didn't return home from school on friday. he is 5'1". 111-pound. uses crutches. he is at risk because he should be taking medicine twice a day and has no medicine with him. law enforcement authority it is are searching for a 14 queer old girl missing from oakland. bruanna robinson was seen thursday. she took clothes with her.

brianna suffers from multiple sclerosis and and needs medication. >> contra cost contract attorneys will file a lawsuit. nathaniel burris is charged with killing his girlfriend and her friend who was waiting for her. he is scheduled to go to trial in september. this is the first time contra costa county is seeking the death penalty in years. they are investigating a triple homicide. they received a 9-1-1 call from a home around 3:30 yesterday morning. they found a 31 year old man and two teenagers. all had been shot and killed. they don't think the shooting was random. it doesn't appear to be a murder suicide. >> when officers arrived, they went into the house and searching the house and they actually unfortunately located

three deceased victims at the and the person who originally called 9-1-1. the motive is under investigation. three people could be arraigned this week in connection to a huge meth bust in san jose. had he seized meth from an apartment on woods drive on thursday. the drugs were found while investigators were looking for stolen ipads and it is worth an estimated $4 million. it is being called one of the largest meth busts in history. >> can i make you more like who lives next door or here. now, you really. you never know what place is safer than others. >> dea agents are looking into who else is connected to the drug lab. it could have been a distribution hub for other criminal networks. students will rally for education after mack making a 99 mile journey. >> no cut. education will be free.

after this. and damage everywhere you look here. henryville which is about 2,000 people and the hardest hit the and one effour tornado rating in the big band of storms we had a couple of days ago. this is the hardest hit. the school bus that is sticking. and embedded into the diner there. and the chassis of the school bus is ripped apart from the body of the school bus. it is on the other side. now the school bus initially started off across the street at the school. that is the junior high/high school of henryville. and there were 39 students who the principal got off of. some of them off the bus and into an interior section of the school. they all walked out uninjured and no fatalities which is quite remarkable. the principal doing a great job to get everybody safe. two other school buses in the lot that were damaged and of course the tornado happened here right at about three low

clock. and making decisions to let the kids get in the buses and towards their home or do we keep them here and they made all the right decisions and it worked. it goes on for hundreds of yards. and this tornado was three to 400 yards wide and that determination is not made just yet. there is a neighborhood back here behind the billing and they are all completely destroyed. you know, it has been two days and little bit of progress to be made. the poles, telephone poles. electric poles. immediately come in here and get them nailed in so they can get power become which they need to begin the processes for cleaning up. of course cellphone tower it is have been knocked out and communication is difficult for people. that's why the number of fatalities has gone up and down and so many tornadoes. it is hard to get to all the communities. i will tell you one story. it is a town around here. the same tornado hit there before it hit here in

henryville. for the last two days we are hear about a child they found in the field 2 miles from her home. we are now able to confirm the two year old girl who was pulled from her mother's arms, the child survived. landed in the field some place. the mother, father, 3-year-old brother and infant child all died. the baby is in critical condition in a hospital in louisville which is 20 miles from here and distant relatives are now in there with the child and wondering -- watching after her. a story of loss for that family and for that little family. claudine, back to you. >> so much heartache out there. we talk about the snow and damage and clean up and still the possibility that the tornado season could strike again there, couldn't it? >> well, certainly. this is happening in early march. we are nowhere near the peak of tornado season. that is in may, june, end of april when we see the majority

we zoom in, you can see the fire burned completely through the house. there is no more back wall. you can see completely to the backyard. if we look at the upper story windows, you can see daylight through them. the roof of the house is gone, too. the home where this fire started, the home you're looking at was vacant. no one was living here at the time of this fire but neighbors have told us this morning there have been problems with people squatting in this house kicking in the front door, hanging out in the abay donned home. neighbors say it's been an eye sore on this street for a while. >> this building has been abandoned. i have been here for about four years. and this building should have been down, because in the back, it's just full of debris. >> reporter: now there are three other homes connected to the one where the fire started. those homes are not abandoned. there are families living in all three of them. a total of 28 people were displaced by the fire, including several children. the red cross is out here last night trying to find a new

place to stay. an arson investigation is now under way. we saw the investigators pull up in the truck about an hour ago. there has been a fire crew out here overnight, keeping guard, keeping watch in this area. if we take you back out here live, show you the front of this house again, you can see there is caution tape in front of the home. that's because this house where the fire started is structurally unsound. now, firefighters told us that they still have not been able to get in touch with the owner of the house where this fire all started. but a neighbor said she remembers it was owned by an elderly lady who passed away a few years ago. she passed it onto her children and the neighbor says the home became dilapidated after that. we're expecting more information later this morning from the battalion chief who we are told will be out here sometime in the next half hour. live in san francisco, alli rasmus, k.t.v.u. only minutes after getting the bay view fire under control. san francisco firefighters rushed to a second fire that started around 11:20 last night at a home on california and

hyde streets. two people were displaced by that fire but no one was hurt. the cause of that fire is also being investigated. in overnight news an a.c. transit passenger was injured during a police pursuit in oakland. sometime after midnight, officers were chasing the driver of what they believed was a stolen mercedes benz. police pursued him for 10 blocks down international boulevard. he tried but just couldn't overtake an a.c. transit bus. that buggs was forced to make a quick stop. the passenger inside bumped his head but is expected to be ok. the suspect ended up crashing and damaging his car, but tried to run. he was eventually caught by police. there was also a high speed chase overnight in concord and that one ended with an arrest. that chase began just after 2:00 this morning on clayton road past treat boulevard. police tried to stop that car for reckless driving but the driver kept on going and speeds topped 90 miles an hour during the chase. the suspect's car eventually spun out on brian highway, and the driver was arrested. a man in oakland was killed after being shot multiple times and run over by a car.

oakland police officers were called to 88th avenue and east street in east oakland just after 3 this morning. and that is where they found the victim in the street. police are questioning witnesses, but right now they haven't released a motive. no arrests have been made. occupy oakland protesters are rallying in support of three demonstrators accused of a hate crime. several dozen people matched through downtown -- marched through downtown oakland last night alleging police abuses. michael davis, necca crawford and randolph wilkins were arrested after a demonstration outside a wells fargo bank last month. officers say the occupiers attacked and robbed a woman who was heckling them. they're also accused of insulting her perceived sexuality. davis was arraigned friday while the other two head to court friday. things have calmed down this morning after a computer switch over caused major flight delays. united and continental airlines combined its computer systems into one yesterday in a final step of its americaner. that process -- merger. that process involved moving millions of reservations which caused problems for passengers.

more than 50 others are injuredded. the name and hometown of the american victim has not been released yet. officials say the tracks were under maintenance, but it's still too early to tell what caused the trash. this is the worst train disaster in poland in more than 20 years. also new this morning with only two days to go until super tuesday, a new poll released shows mitt romney is closing the gap in the key state of ohio. the poll shows the former massachusetts governor is now tied with rick santorum, with 32% of support from likely voters. earlier polls showed romney trailing santorum. political analysts say ohio is important on super tuesday, because it's traditionally a bellwether of who will win the general election. and mitt romney came out on top in the washington state caucuses this weekend. bringing another victory to the former massachusetts governor, with 100% of the precincts reporting, romney received 38% of yesterday's vote. ron paul came in 2nd with 25%. rick santorum and newt gingrich

national weather service that the tornado that touchedded down here in hazelgreen in madison county was much stronger than they initially learned. it was categorized as an ef2 and now the national weather service has upgraded it to an ef3 meaning storm winds here were about 140 miles per hour when they came through on friday. the storm itself was about 250 yards wide and it stretched 34 miles diagonally across the county. and i can show you an example of the storm's track. if you see on the left side, that red brick home seemingly unscathed. as the storm hop scotched across a county. it took a direct hit into the home you're looking at right now. you can see literally, horizontally slicing that home in half. and the home to the right here at the end of the cul-de-sac was shaken so violently that the red brick right here on the right hand side was literally shaken off the foundation of this home. here is another example of the devastation that you're seeing. you can see these cars

completely engulfed in debris, in this particular home. folks here are telling us that they're usually on the other end of the spectrum. they're usually the ones that are going out to help other victims. this area was hit with an ef5, as we all know, april 27th, 2011. less than 11 months ago. so folks here are usually the ones that are donating and helping out victims. then they find themselves on the other end of this spectrum. not too far from us is a church, about the church that would typically be holding service now. because of damage to that particular church, they're holding service at a local elementary school where hundreds are attending actually right now as we speak, and then shortly thereafter, they will be going out to the local community, doing everything they can to get their lives back together. we certainly see a very strong sense of unity after such massive devastation. claudine. >> has some of the shock worn off? it sounds like people are now just kind of digging in and trying to cleanup? you showed some people loading

>> welcome back to k.t.v.u. mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. 2 dozen people in san francisco are in need of temporary housing after fire destroyed their home. it happened last night in the city's bay view district and this morning arson investigators have been called out to try to determine the cause of that fire. coming up at 9:45, alli rasmus will have a live update from that scene. a fire damaged a historic building in marin county. fire crews responded yet to the marin county stables in fairfax to check out a report of downed wires. they got there and discovered the second floor of the barn was on fire. crews were able to get the horses out of harm's way and put the fire out before it spread to the bottom floor. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. fire investigators are working

with pg&e to try to determine a cause. bay area law enforcement officers are working to find two missing teenagers this morning. 14-year-old brianna robinson of oakland was last seen wednesday. police say she took clothes with her indicating that she may have left on her own, but her parents are very concerned, because brianna suffers from multiple sclerosis and needs medication. anyone with any information about her whereabouts should contact police. newark police are looking for 15-year-old andre colon. police say he did not return home from newark junior high school on friday. he is 5' 1, 111 pounds and uses crutches for scree barack obama palsy and other medical issues. police say he is at risk because he should have medication twice a day and has no medicine with him. three people could be arained this week in connection to a huge meth bust in san jose. authorities seized 750 pounds of meth from an apartment on the woods drive on thursday. the drugs were found while investigators were looking for

the deadly tornadoes across the country are bringing tight knit communities even closer. the combined death toll from this past week, severe weather is estimated to be about 50. that number is expected to rise in the town of harrisburg, illinois, hundreds lined the streets outside a funeral home yesterday to pay their respects to tornado victims killed in wednesday's storms. >> i think it's very important. if i was in their shoes, i would want to see my community pull together. a lot of innocent victims, a lot of things lost, and we just want to pull together and show that everybody cares. >> many mourners are vowing to attend every funeral in their town, whether they knew the victim or not. relief efforts are under way throughout the region. children helped assemble 500 boxes of food and supplies for victims. the children are part of a group that sends relief packages around the world and yesterday happened to be a day they planned to box up supplies. they sent care packages to tornado victims in missouri last year. we have more coverage of

>> good morning to you. a beautiful shot there from the north bay. mid-40s to near 50 degrees at this hour. >> and your time now is 9:44. let's recap the top stories we're waking up to this sunday morning. a two-year-old girl who survived a tornado is in critical condition. she is the only member of her family still alive. tornadoes this past week have killed some 50 people across the country. there are no reports of any major flight delays at s.f.o. a day after a computer glitch caused major problems. united and continental airlines combined computer systems into one yesterday. that process involved moving

millions of reservations, and that did cause problems for passengers. and an a.c. transit passenger was hurt during a police pursuit in oakland. sometime after midnight, officers chased after a suspected stolen mercedes. it went down international boulevard, and the suspect tried to pass the bus but crashed. he was arrested while the a.c. transit passenger was taken to the hospital. he should be ok. arson investigators have been in san francisco's bay view neighborhood overnight after a fire displaced more than two dozen people. ally is live with what's happening right now. >> reporter: mike, the fire started in the house right across the street from us. if we zoom in we can show you a closer look at the damage. the fire burned completely through the home. from where we're standing you can see the back wall is completely gone. and if we tilt up to look at the upper story windows we can also see daylight through them. the roof of this house was burned up, too. arson investigators are on the scene to look into what caused

this fire. they have been here for the last hour and a half. the home where this fire started is vacant but the three houses next to it are not. so there are 28 people living this n. those homes, including several children who were all displaced by this fire. the red cross is helping them find a new place to stay. the mome where the fire started had been abandoned according to neighbors for several years but lots of the neighbors this morning have been telling us there have been problems with people squatting, kicking in the front door and hanging out in this abandoned house, even though it's been vacant and dilapidated for a number of years. neighbors tell us this house has been an eye sore on this street for a while. >> this building has been abandoned. i have been here for about four years, and this building should have been down. in the back it's just full of debris. >> reporter: and this is what she's talking about. about 15 minutes ago, we had a chance to go around to the back of the house, the backyard of the home, and it's pretty clear

someone was living there, even though the house was supposed to be vacant. there was a couch, a barbecue, a mobile home. a barbecue still had food on it by the way. and some toys and personal items in the backyard there. now an arson investigation is under way, as we mentioned. arson investigators got here an hour and a half ago. they're still out here on the scene. we have seen some residents in these other homes that were displaced, come back to the area trying to get back into their homes to see if there's any personal belongings they can recover. so far they've been told some of the buildings are red tagged. the people who have come back this morning haven't been allowed to get back into their homes. a division chief of san francisco fire is supposed to be out here we're told at 10:00. we're hoping to get more information from him, and hoping up to date you on ktvu.com and in later news casts this afternoon. a propose only sheller is triggering a border dispute.

the state mandates that the city of pleasant hill designate an area for an emergency shelter. one proposed spot is on the pleasant hill concord border. but people in concord worry the facility would be too close to a park and an elementary school. >> we're very concerned this area might become a hang-out for people who are homeless. it has been in the past. >> i believe in homeless shelters, and i don't have a problem if it's, you know, if it's in our backyard. >> pleasant hill's planning commissioner would not comment on camera, but stresses nothing has been decided. a study session is scheduled for march 27th. a public hearing will be held after all the study sessions. modesto police are investigating a triple homicide. police received a 911 call from a home around 3:40 yesterday morning. when officers arrived, they found a 31-year-old man and two teenagers. all three had been shot and killed. police say they don't think the
